It's easy to think what you are told to, but try questioning the received wisdom about asylum seekers. It is very convenient for there to be someone to blame for everything that goes wrong; those who remember Tony Blair when he was the leader of the Labour party in opposition might remember that back then it was single parents, and single mothers in particular, who were singled out as scapegoats for all that was wrong in the UK. Tony Blair even went to the US to study their draconian measures to punish single parents to get inspiration for creating our own punitive measures.
However, at some point it must have been realised that racism was a more effective vote winner than sexism and the scapegoat for all of the country's ills was changed from the single mother to the asylum seeker, who is characterised as "bogus" and strangely enough as both a "scrounger" and an "economic migrant". The fact that asylum seekers a said to come here to get benefits and also said to come here to steal "our jobs" just exposes the lack of logic in this propaganda war against the asylum seeker.
Although we categorise them as the "other" and therefore use them as a convenient scapegoat when it suits us we like to claim them as our own. If you don't know what I am talking about here conider this: Albert Einstein was an asylum seeker.
